Bedsores

Bedsores are so unacceptable that Medicare has refused to pay for any costs related to bedsores and bedsore treatment starting October 1, 2008. They have sent a clear signal to nursing homes and hospitals that bedsores are unacceptable and will not be tolerated in the medical community.
The most common causes of bedsores are as follows:
- Failure to reposition an immobile or bedridden patient every two (2) hours;
- Failure to adminsiter proper fluids and nutrition;
- Direct skin contact with moisture from unchanged diapers or wet sheets; and
- General neglect from untrained medical personnel.
If left untreated (or not treated properly), the following complications may result:
- severe pain
- infections
- autonomic dysreflexia
- bladder distension
- osteomyelitis
- pyarthroses
- sepsis
- amyloidosis
- anemia
- urethral fistula
- gangrene
- renal failure
- death
